Sinn 1174 HAHN, Clarence Services Sunday, 2:00 P.M. at St. Stephen Lutheran Truck spills metal rods; cars damaged MERRILL Tfo incidents of truck loads spilled on major highways caused problems for the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department Thursday.

Several motorists reported vehicle damage after 700 pounds of short metal rods spilled on Highway between River Drive in Lincoln County and Naugart Drive in Marathon County late Thursday morning. The rods fell from a Wausau Steel Corp. truck driven by John W. Lond-erville, 44, 12402 Woodland Drive Wausau, who had picked them up in a cardboard box at Northern Wire Co. in Merrill.

Shortly before 7 p.m. Thursday, sheriff's deputies received reports of pallets lying on Highway 17 about five miles north of Merrill. The wooden skids were pulled off the roadway. Church. Friends mav call from 4:00 WESTON Five new groundwater monitoring wells will be drilled in Weston early next week in an attempt to determine where groundwater contamination there is coming from, a state Department of Natural Resources official said.

The monitoring wells will track benzene, an element found in gasoline and known to cause cancer in humans, and tetrachloroethane, an industrial solvent that, under long-term exposure, can cause birth defects, miscarriages and infertility. "The wells should help us track the contaminants to their source," said Ken Markart, environmental specialist with the DNR in Rhinelander. The Highway 29 Self Service gas station, 5505 Schofield Schofield, has already been named as a source of gasoline in the groundwater and is working to clean up the contamination. Public records indicate that Walt's Petroleum Service, 5201 E. Jelinek Modern Sewer and Septic System, 5107 Sternberg and the former Marathon Volkswagon, now closed, all Weston, are being investigated as sources of tetrachloroethane contamination.

Hoffer's 5010 Meskar Road, Electric, 5101 Meskar Road, and Baer's Beverage, 5303 Meskar Road, all Weston, are under investigation for the petroleum contamination, public records show. Water from the contaminated Meskar well is being treated before it is pumped to homes and is safe to drink, Markart said. P.M. until 8:00 P.M Saturday at Helke Funeral Home and from 1:00 P.M. Sunday until the hour of Services at the Church.
