(AP) -Close usually only counts in horseshoes. But for Wisconsin's rebuilding basketball team, close also counts against fifth-ranked Michigan. The Badgers, shut out from the floor for the first 11 minutes, rallied to within five at halftime, then led for portions of the second half before the talented Wolverines prevailed 66-63 Saturday in Big Ten 10-17-24 which trailed 15-7 after Jimmy Smith hit the Badgers' first field goal of the game. Michigan led 27-22 at the half, but the Badgers chipped away until Gregory's jump shot put them in front 33-31. The lead stretched to four points three times, and once was six points, and Wisconsin still led 51-48 with 5:08 left.

But Michigan (2-0) took advantage of Badger foul trouble that eventually sent Ray Syd-nor, Bill Pearson and Bob Falk "I don't think anybody expected a young team like this to beat Michigan," UW Coach Bill Cofield said. "Wisconsin is not as bad as you might think," Cofield said. "We've played poorly on occasion but basically I think our freshmen play an excellent basketball game when they play with intensity, and they played with intensity today." James "Stretch" Gregory scored 24 points and had 15 rebounds for Wisconsin (0-2), to the bench, taking control of rebounding and looking to all-American candidate Ricky Green. Green scored seven of the Wolverines' last 10 points, and finished with 22. "We try to make certain that every time we get a good shot," Cofield said of Wisconsin's slow-down game plan, which also served to blunt Michigan's fast break.

resume in conriaencw siaimv MILWAUKEE (AP) It wasn't fancy, or surprising. It was vintage Marquette, and that was good enough Saturday for a 65-54 college basketball victory over South Carolina. The Warriors, 9-2 and riding a five-game winning streak, used their long-shot artists to take South Carolina out of a zone defense, then turned Bo Ellis loose inside to take the game away. "I'd hoped maybe I could beat him this last time, but he's just too tough," said Gamecock Coach Frank McGuire, who coached Marquette Coach Al McGuire in college. The Warrior coach has announced his resignation, effective at the end of the season.

South Carolina gave up its zone late in the first half after guards Gary Rosenberger, Butch Lee and Jim Boy lan opened fire from the outside to help the 12th-ranked Warriors to a 32-25 intermission lead. An equal opportunity employer "We were not trying to stall, we were just trying to make sure we got a good shot, make sure we did not let them pressure us into shots we did not want to take," he said. Michigan Coach Johnny Orr was unhappy with the officiating, complaining that bad calls "changed the whole tempo of the game." But he still acknowledged that Wisconsin was a factor, too. "They're a good team," he said. "They're big and strong and they're very capable.
